How Steve Tracks 50+ Competitors Without Manual Research

Discover how Steve automates competitor tracking at scale with automatic research, real-time monitoring, and instant status updates for unlimited competitors.

Tracking more than 5-10 competitors manually becomes impossible. Each competitor requires hours of research—monitoring their website, reading reviews, tracking pricing changes, analyzing features. PMMs end up choosing which competitors to ignore.

This creates competitive blind spots. The competitor you're not tracking launches a feature that directly threatens your positioning. By the time you notice, it's too late—sales is already losing deals and doesn't know why.

How Steve Automates Competitor Tracking

Steve removes the manual work from competitor tracking through automated research and monitoring. Track 50, 100, or 500 competitors with the same effort it takes to track one.

Adding Competitors Takes Seconds

Navigate to Competitors in your Steve project. Click Add Competitor in the top-right corner.

Enter competitor website URLs. Steve accepts any format:

  • competitor.com
  • www.competitor.com
  • https://competitor.com/product

Add up to 5 competitors at once by clicking Add another URL. Steve extracts company details automatically from the website—name, logo, description—no manual data entry required.

Click Submit. Steve immediately queues automated research for each competitor.

Automatic Research Runs in Background

The moment you add a competitor, Steve triggers automatic research. The createAndTriggerResearch API mutation starts background jobs that:

Scrape competitor websites for:

  • Pricing tiers and plans
  • Customer testimonials
  • Company positioning and messaging

Aggregate review data from:

  • G2 reviews and ratings
  • Capterra feedback

Real-Time Research Status Updates

The Competitors page auto-refreshes every 3 seconds while research is running. You don't need to manually reload—Steve shows progress in real-time.

Each competitor tile displays a research status indicator with three states:

Pending (orange dot) - Research actively running in background Partial (blue dot) - Some data collected, shows "8/15 fields" progress Complete (green dot) - All available intelligence gathered

Research typically completes in 2-5 minutes per competitor. For 50 competitors added simultaneously, Steve finishes all research in the same 2-5 minute window because processing happens in parallel, not sequentially.

Tracked vs. Untracked Competitors

Steve separates competitors into Tracked and Untracked tabs. This lets you:

Actively monitor your primary competitors in the Tracked view Keep secondary competitors in Untracked for reference without cluttering your main view Toggle tracking status anytime with a single click

Only tracked competitors appear in battle cards, news alerts, and automated reports. Untracked competitors remain in your database for future activation.
